Second Conditioning

Vision exercise is the second conditioning. 

Annual strategy workshop is a must. We build a SWOT. Add a look-back and accomplishment chart. Sometimes we include a snapshot of what-went-well and what-didn’t. Top-down trickle of corporate goals are stated. Strategic themes for next mid-decade are announced. You are allowed to define your strategy relevant to your business and expected to align well with corporate goals and themes. 

Nothing wrong with it. As long as you are not a cost-centre. Most teams and business units within local teams of large companies are created for convenience of delivery management. Not necessarily for revenue growth. In such cases, strategy-vision-mission exercises may become an overkill. 

Define and live your “Mantra”, instead. Let it tell why your team is existing. What and how you live. Let it guide every decision and action. Bind people and bring their passion to play. Measure results and outcomes through that lens. Obviously it’ll align with corporate objectives and themes. But, creates own identity and way-of-life.

How to find and work with right people

You might have heard – You are the company you keep! It is true. But easier said than done. If you are avoiding someone, it will be visible. If you are pushing to be with someone, it is visible too. Finding and being with right people should be seamless and graceful.

When you respect and engage with high performers – irrespective of their experience level, grade, and background, you feel charged. High-quality performers do induce their characters to others who are in their proximity. It is easy to identify them through their speed, precision and detail orientation. It is difficult to dampen their engine, for a long time. They tend to sidestep paths of high-resistance and find ways to move forward, swiftly and precisely. They are busy. They are smart and add value at every instance of interaction.

The pace of your work, precision, and detail-orientation displays your confidence. Confidence is derived out of repeated successes and learnings from shorter failures. This builds competence. You will start doing more and better. Confident people are the right people to work with.

Look at how a confident doctor boosts the confidence of a chronic patient. If he is quick, precise, and detail oriented, he will be decisive. He will convince the patient of the procedure which he believes works well and confident of. The patient follows and achieves better disease management, a better lifestyle irrespective of the condition and prognosis.

While you are building your new venture, testing your idea and putting together an initiative, look-out for confident people in the form of team members, sponsors, and potential customers. They will help you drive confidently and maneuver well. Exploration and experimentation require those who are confident of doing so than the confidence in the map or the plan they carry. Confident people are dynamic, quick learners and forward-thinkers. They are the right people to work with to help you play at your best.

Best strategy for being the best at what you do

Being-the-best at whatever you choose to do is the most important commitment to keep. Alternative choice helps none. You may say, I did not choose this job/task. It was assigned to me. The fact that you accepted the task, makes it your choice. Be the best at it. People measure you through the output/outcome of the task. Not the task itself.

Being closer to the field of work – knowing the best people,  customers and their needs is the first step. Being relevant in the field of work – for the people, customers and their pressing problems/priorities through your services/solutions takes you further.

Being significant contributor in the field of work – for the people, customers and their changing priorities makes you the best.
